Swann Queen: The Category Is: Run or Resist.

Kick off October and LGBTQ+ History Month with Swann Queen , a short film by L cedeño miller inspired by the true story of William Dorsey Swann - the world's first drag queen. Swann is the first person in recorded US history to consider themselves a drag queen, host drag balls in their home, and fight for their rights as a queer person – in late 1800s Washington, DC. Swann Queen , starring DC drag legends Pussy Noir and King Molasses , is a short fiction film and historical reimagining of a night at a ball hosted by Billy Swann and their brother Dan. When the police raid the party, Billy must decide whether to run or resist. The night will also feature drag performances by local artists Hennessey (who appears in the film) and Mas (who made original music for the film); as well as a trailer premiere of Black in Space's upcoming film, The Story of Space, and remarks from Swann Queen's director. About The Filmmaker L cedeño miller (they/them) is an Afro-Nicaragüense filmmaker and cultural worker from Miami and based in Washington, DC. As a producer in both fiction and documentary, they create visual altars and tell stories that would have made little L feel seen. Know Before You Go Registration is free, and walk-ins are welcome.
